NorthBay’s Marine Debris Initiative
Collect and Report!
Use the data recording sheet below to collect litter at your school and in your neighborhood, and report the data to us. We will include it as part of our ongoing effort to rid the mid-atlantic of marine debris. You can be part of our first 50,000 pieces of trash or our first ton collected! Let us know about the cool things you are doing in your environment to make the oceans more healthy!
So far, NorthBay students and staff have collected 44,581 pieces of marine debris that weighed 4,928 pounds!
Marine debris is essentially garbage in water. Some marine debris comes from commercial fishing activities. But a lot of it comes from litter we throw on land. Everything we do on land eventually winds up in the ocean. And our trash, especially our plastic trash, negatively affects fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, sea turtles, whales, and dolphins as it travels from our streets and yards in the watershed, through our neighborhood creeks and streams to our larger rivers, the Chesapeake Bay and then the worlds oceans.
The solution to the marine debris problem is at the heart of the NorthBay education program: Personal responsibility. We need to recognize that our actions have either positive or negative effects. We are responsible for the marine debris, and other environmental problems, and it will take our collective action to fix these problems.
On these pages you will find updates on our efforts to research and remove marine debris from the Upper Chesapeake, updates on the efforts of our students to research and remove litter and trash from their neighborhoods and local waterways, and resources to help spread the word and effect a solution.
